  • Consider the climate you live in.

The climate is a very important factor to consider when deciding on the right color for your roof. If you live in a hot climate, choosing a light colored roof will help to keep energy costs lower. A white roof will help to reflect sunlight and keep your house cooler in warm areas. While a white roof may be helpful in reducing energy costs, it's not necessarily the most attractive. Manufacturers such as CertainTeed offer cool roofing options that enable a homeowner to lower their energy costs and choose an attractive color. • Choose a contrasting or complementary color.

When choosing the color of your shingles, you'll want to decide if you want the color to complement or contrast with the other colors of your home. The siding color is the most prevalent, but there's also the trim to think about. Both contrasting and complementary colors can look nice, so it's really a matter of the homeowner's personal preference.

  • Keep your neighborhood in mind.

We've all driven by a home that sticks out like a sore thumb in a neighborhood. It's probably safe to say that you don't want your home to be "that" home! Take a look at the surrounding homes around you. Take a drive and make note of what colors you like and don't like.

  • Visit the manufacturer's website.

The best manufacturers will not only have examples of different homes you can look at, but digital technology that allows you to design and visualize the right colors for your own home. CertainTeed for example, has a variety of design tools that help you to explore different color combinations and even upload images of your actual home to get a customized feel.
