How to Clean Your CT Vinyl Siding

By Blue Corona Dev Jan 23, 2015

Vinyl siding has quickly become the most popular siding material in the United States. It’s durable, low maintanence and makes the exterior of a home look fantastic. However, like all outdoor products, it needs the occasional attention as it can get dirty and dull over time. Cleaning your siding can be relatively inexpensive if you make it a DIY project. Whether you’re using a power washer or going by hand, here are a few tips to keep your CT vinyl siding looking new and clean.

Close all the doors and windows and turn off the power to any exterior electrical units. Cover any glass or metal that may be damaged by the solution and move all intruding furniture. Check the siding for mold or mildew. To tell if it’s mold, put a drop of bleach on it – if it turns white, it’s mold; if it stays dark, it’s dirt.

Hand Wash

It’s best to determine between regular or strong solution before you begin. Cleansers that contain 70% water and 30% vinegar make for great all-purpose solutions that remove light mold and mildew stains. If you’re looking for stronger solution, mix two-thirds powdered household cleaner, one-third powdered laundry detergent, one quart laundry bleach and a gallon of water.

Once you’ve finished making your solution, clean the siding with a soft cloth or long-handled bristle brush. To prevent streaking, start at the bottom and work up towards the house rinsing the cleaning solution as you go. For textured surfaces, strictly use a soft bristle brush to keep the grooves stain-free.

Power Wash

Before using a power washer, read the instructions thoroughly and carefully. Do the same for siding manufacturers – some manufacturers don’t want pressure washers used on their products while others have limitations on the amount of pressure and cleaners than can be used.

As you begin to wash, make sure the washer is pointed directly at eye level to keep the water on top of the CT vinyl siding where it be cleaned most effectively. Aiming the washer up at an angle can drive water behind the siding. Be careful when using a pressure washer around openings like doors, windows and plumbing connections.

With just a little time and effort, your vinyl siding can look brand new and will provide many years of protection for your home.
