How to Make DIY Thanksgiving Decorations

By Blue Corona Dev Nov 27, 2013

It’s almost time for turkey, stuffing, casseroles, and pies. With Thanksgiving this week, everyone has food, friends, and family on their minds. The holidays undoubtedly are a wonderful time of year, however they can certainly put a less than wonderful dent in your wallet. Having to buy everything from gifts, to food, to decorations, gets expensive fast. There’s no need for extravagant and costly decorations to have a beautiful looking home, however. While normally we don’t suggest the DIY method for home improvement, decorating the do-it-yourself way can help keep costs down. In order to help you save money for the things that really matter this holiday season, we’re giving you a few tips on how to decorate your home for Thanksgiving on a budget.

1. Find Natural Placeholders

Every homeowner wants their Thanksgiving table to look as best as possible on the big day. One of the best parts about this holiday is that you can take advantage of nature to add a seasonal touch to your table that will also look great. Instead of buying expensive placeholders for example, send your children outside to look for leaves and they’ll be out from underfoot while you’re cooking too! Use a permanent marker to write your guests names on the leaves and place them on the table. Here’s an example of this from Country Living.

2. Use a Pumpkin as a Vase

One of the critical components to a Thanksgiving table is the centerpiece of course. A low cost, festive idea is to use a pumpkin as a vase. All you need for this cheap and simple project is a pumpkin, a plastic container, and flowers of your choice. Cut off the top of the pumpkin, put the container inside, and place the flowers inside the container. Voila! You have a beautiful centerpiece that is sure to impress guests, at a low cost to you. Here’s an example of a final product from ProFlowers.

3. Create a Giving Thanks Tree

Start a new holiday tradition with friends and family by making a tree that shares what everyone is thankful for this year. You don’t even need a real tree! You can fill an empty jar or container with anything from dirt, to sand, to rocks, and stick a few branches from the backyard in them. Make it a family project by having your kids cut out some leaf shaped paper ornaments and tie them to the branches with some ribbon or yarn. Here’s a version from the DIY on the Cheap Blog.

4. Make Ice Cream Cone Cornucopias

Set them out as an after dinner treat, or give them to your guests to take home, ice cream cone cornucopias are festive and easy to make. All you’ll need are ice cream cones, plastic wrap, a few pieces of ribbon and the filling of your choice. This can be in the form of candies, nuts, or anything edible. They’re budget friendly, and sure to be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Here’s an example from The Craft Patch Blog.

5. Hang a Pinecone Garland

Another piece of nature you can utilize that works great for decorations are pinecones. To make a pinecone garland like the one pictured below, you’ll need some twine, metallic paint and extra glitter if desired, eye hook screws and pinecones, of course! Read more on how to construct this creative and sparkly idea on the Simply Happenstance Blog.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving together. Let us know if we can help you with your Connecticut home improvement projects before the craziness of the holidays really kick in!
