Answering the question of how to tell if you need a roof repair can be accomplished by a visual inspection that is best performed by a professional for their expertise and safety precautions. If you choose to inspect you roof yourself, make sure you do so safely, and here are a few signs on how to tell if you need a roof repair.
- Missing or damaged shingles. Inspect your roof for gaps and missing shingles. There is no need to actually get on top of your roof for this particular situation. If you walk around the perimeter of your home and see noticeable damage or shingles that have fallen, that is one of the easiest ways you will be able to tell if you need a roof repair. Missing shingles may be caused from high winds, or improper fastening.
- Buckling. A buckling roof is another big factor when thinking about how to tell if you need a roof repair. If you notice buckling, you should immediately call a professional to repair the damage, before a bigger problem ensues. Buckling can occur when a roof is not properly ventilated, which allows moisture to get into your home. Moisture can lead to leaking, which is a much more expensive repair. Additionally, if a roof is buckling, it is likely letting energy out, which decreases the energy efficiency of your home, and increases your monthly bills.
- Rotting. Check for signs of roof rot! Rotting occurs when shingles have absorbed excessive amounts of moisture leading to rapid deterioration. If you notice holes in shingles, mold or algae growth it is likely you need a roof repair immediately. Because of snowy weather in winter, the chances of roof rot increase, so you’ll want to be diligent about checking for signs once the snow has cleared. This is an easy way to tell if you need a roof repair.
- Blistering or curled shingles. Similar to rotting, blistering or curled shingles are caused from water absorption and inadequate ventilation. Curled shingles will not help to protect your roof like they are supposed to and allow water to get in between them, which could lead to bigger problems. If you notice blistering or curled shingles, you should call a professional to conduct a roof repair as soon as you can.
Your roof is one of the most important aspects of your home. Use these tips on how to tell if you need a roof repair and you may be able to avoid a bigger problem before it’s too late.
