Patio & Deck Remodeling Ideas

By Blue Corona Dev May 14, 2014

If you love spending a cool, relaxing day outdoors, a deck is the perfect addition to your home and provides the added benefit of increasing your home’s value and making it more attractive for a sale later on. No matter your preference for style or the size or shape of your lawn, you can create a deck that suits your taste and provides hours of enjoyment. A good deck can capture a view, create a comfortable outdoor room, and add a feeling of spaciousness to your home by blurring the boundaries between inside and out. In this article, we will look at a few of the most commonly used patio materials.

Composite Decking

If you like the appearance of a wood deck but don’t like staining wood or dealing with rot, composite decking may be the best choice for you. Composite decking comes in a variety of colors and effectively mimics the look of real wood without the associated wood issues. Composite decking will not rot and will last much longer than real wood, making the additional cost of composite decking well worth it in the long run.

As a material, stone makes an attractive patio deck, offering a natural look for your landscaping. Stone comes in a variety of colors and textures, so you can purchase stone to suit any color scheme or look you want. You can purchase or cut stone into squares and install in a tile-like pattern or purchase natural stone and fill in the gaps with mortar or sand. If you want a truly natural look, use natural stone shapes and let moss grow between the stones. While homeowners may be attracted by the look and durability of stone, its irregular surfaces can make for a rough walking area. It can also be heavy and, due to the irregular shapes, stone can be difficult to fit together when laying out the patio. Above all, cost can be a large factor.

Stained and Scored Concrete

If you already have a concrete patio and are looking for a way to dress it up, consider staining the concrete. Stains are available in a variety of colors that can mimic tile, stone and other surfaces. You can choose multiple stain colors to make a pattern or design. Scoring the concrete gives the patio the appearance of grouted tile.

Ceramic or porcelain tiles can make a very distinctive patio. Tiles come in a wide variety of styles and can create a very seamless transition from indoors to outdoors. While these tiles may resemble the tile that you might use in your bathroom or on the floor of your kitchen, be sure to use both tile and grout that are meant for exterior use. It’s also important to use tiles that are not very porous, or will not absorb a lot of water, to resist damage from freezing and thawing with the change of seasons. Usually unglazed tiles work best for large walking spaces because they tend to be less slippery than glazed tiles.Tile does have some potential downsides. It can be slick, so it might not be the best choice for spa or pool areas. It can also get slippery if it holds water for a long amount of time, causing a film of algae to grow on the surface. Finally, tile does tend to be more costly than brick and sometimes even more than stone.
