Refresh Your CT Kitchen Without a Complete Remodel?
By Blue Corona Dev Aug 5, 2013
Whether it’s just a quick update or a total renovation, every kitchen needs a new look every once in awhile. When choosing where to invest your money, it’s important to get the biggest impact for the smallest price. And there are ways to make your kitchen space look brand new without breaking the bank on an entire remodel. From a fresh coat of paint to installing new cabinets, here are some great design ideas to give your kitchen a quick and successful face-lift.
New hanging lights over the kitchen island or dining set can create a new focal point for the room, drawing attention away from older spots. Average kitchen lights will cost about $200 per unit, so you can remodel on any budget. You can also install small (and cheap!) lights under the cabinets that showcase d’cor, wall art or small appliances that sit on the counters.
Knobs & Pulls
New hardware is the easiest way to update cabinetry, since it gives a fresh look to old styles. Choose designs that match other finishes in your kitchen, like black metal knobs with a black counter top or steel pulls with a steel stove top and fridge.
If you can’t afford new cabinetry, floors or a backsplash, a new color is a great way to redo your kitchen. High gloss options are a good option for surfaces that are still in good shape, as they tend to draw the eye, while mattes cover up scratches. For walls, choose a color that contrasts the appliances and counter tops for a dramatic appearance. And while new kitchen flooring is expensive, a fresh coat of white, gray or blue give your kitchen a classic feel. If you’re feeling extra creative you can paint a faded geometric design on your floor, like a faux rug.
Forget the wall-to-wall cabinetry that crowds your kitchen and gives it a claustrophobic look. Let your dining accessories breathe a little with glass cabinet doors or by removing the doors altogether. Create great color contrast by painting the back of the cabinet or adding wallpaper with a fun design. Don’t open up your kitchen too much, though. Keep your lower cabinets closed to hide unsightly cleaning supplies or older spare cutlery.
Purchase a Rug
While we’re speaking of rugs and old floors, purchase a small rug to hide soft spots or imperfections in your floor is a much cheaper alternative to repairing your entire floor. Lay it over cracked spots, most likely near the kitchen sink or the door to a deck or patio for a small yet stylish new look. Be sure to purchase a rug that brings a fun pop of color to your kitchen, as well as one that will last a long time, as the kitchen is one of the most popular rooms in your home.
Islands & Peninsulas
Revamp the center of your kitchen by changing its color, installing a new material or adding new design details. Switching counter top materials is a great way to splurge on a refreshed kitchen while not having to change the kitchen’s structure. Putting corbels under the breakfast bar can add dimension and extra design to the island while staying on budget. If you’re tight on space and don’t have an island, purchase a small, wheel-away island with a butcher block top that can be brought out during cooking hours and stowed away during dining and entertaining.
Blank wall space offers many options for dressing up your kitchen. Visit flea markets and yard sales for less expensive d’cor, or shop at home goods stores for one statement piece. Fun items include stylish clocks, mirrors, funny signs, wall art or photo frames. Storage can also act as decorations as you can install shelves above the window for decorative plates and plants, or even a pole above the sink to hang pots and pans from. One other, and increasingly popular, idea is to paint one area of your kitchen with chalkboard paint. Most homeowners choose to freshen up an old fridge with this paint for grocery lists and entertainment for kids, or paint a cabinet or pantry door for quick to-do lists.
