Tips on Selecting the Best Remodeling Contractor

If you are ready to begin a home remodeling project, it is important not to make that journey alone. A trusted contractor can act as your guide throughout the entire process, making sure you stay on budget, everything is installed correctly and taking care of any government licenses. You can, of course, do these things by your own but a professional makes the processes much easier. However, there are some contractors that will take advantage of a homeowner’s lack of expertise in home remodeling. Therefore, it is important to research several companies and feel confident in your chosen remodeling contractor.
Ask for referrals: It is always best to ask friends or family for recommendations on any local CT contractors. If you are the first of those you know to embark on such a project, check Angie’s List or HomeAdvisor and make sure the Connecticut Better Business Bureau certifies the companies you find on these sites. Once you get into contact with the remodeling contractors, you can ask them for phone numbers of their previous customers who they did similar projects with.
Check licensing: Any contractor worth his salt will know you are going to ask to see a specialized license from CT or your home state and therefore should have these documents at the ready. If not, it may be a sign that that contractor is not the best choice. The license will tell you that your contract does not have any current or past infractions with the government and if he/she has insurance that protects you and the workers should anything happen on your property.
Get a contract: Not only do you want to see a draft of the contract, but you also want it to be as detailed as possible. A contract should include the base price and payment schedule, exactly what is to be done and by what date and any warranties, as well as much more. A detailed contract guarantees that the contractor cannot back out of anything he promised up-front and that you will receive the highest quality work. Additionally, it is important to never select a remodeling contractor who demands payment upfront. Paying a 10% down payment is acceptable, but often if you pay in full before the work begins, the contractor has no reason to stay or provide you superior craftsmanship.
Cheapest is not always best: While the cheapest estimate may seem the most appealing, it often means lower quality materials or less experienced workers. Then again, it is also necessary to stay away from the highest estimate, because that contractor is often over charging you for his/her services. Find a happy medium and check to make sure the provided rates are close to the national average or similar projects that past customers were happy with. Additionally, be on the lookout for lines such as “this price is only good for today!” because often the contractor is trying to pressure you into something that will only benefit them.
