Effective Attic Ventilation Systems

Attic vents help remove excess heat and moisture to protect your roof from premature deterioration. Proper ventilation is a key to a long lasting roof. Effective attic ventilation systems also promote energy efficiency by helping to reduce the load on your air conditioner in the summer, and also reduce the risk of ice dam formation on your roof in the winter potentially.

There are different types of roof vents and different strategies for achieving effective roof ventilation. Here’s a brief overview provided by Fiderio & Sons.

Types of Roof Vents

  • Ridge vents: A ridge vent is a type of vent installed at the peak of a sloped roof. The primary goal of the ridge vent is to allow warm, humid air to escape outside through the ridge vents.
  • Soffit vents: Soffit vents are most commonly described as running parallel to the eaves and are usually in the form of grilles that run the length of each soffit. A soffit is an exterior or interior architectural feature, generally the underside of any construction element. These vents work with ridge and gable vents to promote good roof ventilation.
  • Gable-end vents: Installed near the peak of a gable end, this screened vent can allow hot air to leave the attic or fresh air to enter, depending on prevailing breezes and temperature conditions.
  • Powered attic ventilators/fans (PAV): Most frequently recognized as attic fans, there are a variety of PAV to choose from. Some are designed and installed at the gable end, or mounted on the roof, while others mount in the attic floor. PAVs contain an electrically powered fan which are controlled by a thermostat. The purpose of the fan is to exhausts hot air from the attic on hot summer days.

**All of these roof vents can be installed in an existing roof, or when your roofing is being replaced.**
