Three Season Sunroom Remodeling That Starts With the Structure

Many Connecticut homes have a three season room that has served the family well for years but is starting to show its age. This three season sunroom remodeling project began with a room that already had windows and screens. The lower walls, however, needed attention, along with one of the support posts. Fiderio & Sons rebuilt the lower portion of all three walls, replaced the post, and finished the room with new siding outside and shiplap inside.

The result is a sunroom renovation that keeps the existing window openings while giving the room a stronger, cleaner, and more finished look.

The Project: Sunroom Reconstruction From the Floor Up

Partial wall reconstruction. Our team rebuilt the lower portions of all three walls, working from the existing floor framing up to the existing window openings.

Structural support. One 4x4 support post was removed and replaced. Temporary roof supports were used as needed to keep the structure safe and stable while the work was completed.

Wall framing. The rebuilt walls use new 2x6 framing with studs spaced 16 inches on center.

Sheathing and weather protection. The new framing was covered with 1/2 inch CDX plywood sheathing and Tyvek or an equivalent house wrap to help protect the walls from moisture.

Exterior siding. Outside, the lower walls received CertainTeed Board & Batten S8 white vinyl siding with matching J channels, corner posts, and trim beneath the windows. Learn more about our siding services.

Interior shiplap. Inside, our crew removed the existing wood siding on the house wall next to the sliding patio door and installed white primed 7 1/4 inch pine shiplap.

Cleanup. Construction debris was removed and the work area was cleaned at the end of the project.

How Fiderio & Sons Handled the Sunroom Renovation

A three season room renovation that involves walls and a support post needs careful planning. Replacing a support post means the roof load has to be managed during the work, which is why temporary supports were used as needed. Rebuilding the lower walls up to the existing window openings allowed the room to keep its windows while the structure below was renewed.

What to Know Before Remodeling a Three Season Room

Look at the structure first. Soft spots, worn lower walls, or a tired support post are signs the room may need reconstruction, not just cosmetic updates.

Understand what affects the investment. Cost depends on how much of the wall needs rebuilding, whether structural parts like posts need replacement, and your siding and interior finish selections.

Timeline factors. Scope, conditions found once walls are opened, material availability, and weather all influence timing. Our team will walk through expected timing during your consultation.

Make selections with guidance. Our Design Center and Showroom in Meriden is open by appointment. Our article on choosing siding color and style may also help.

Financing is available. Fiderio & Sons offers financing options to help make projects more manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can you remodel a three season sunroom without replacing the windows?

Yes. A three season sunroom can often be remodeled while keeping the existing window openings. On this project, the room already had windows and screens, so Fiderio & Sons rebuilt the lower portions of all three walls from the existing floor framing up to the existing window openings. This approach renewed the structure and finishes below the windows while the window openings stayed in place.

  • What does sunroom reconstruction involve?

Sunroom reconstruction means rebuilding parts of the room's structure rather than only updating finishes. On this project, that included new 2x6 wall framing with studs 16 inches on center, 1/2 inch CDX plywood sheathing, Tyvek or an equivalent house wrap, and the replacement of one 4x4 support post. Temporary roof supports were used as needed while the post was replaced.

  • What siding works well on a three season room?

Vinyl siding is a practical choice for a three season room because it is low maintenance and comes in many styles. This project used CertainTeed Board & Batten S8 white vinyl siding with matching J channels, corner posts, and trim beneath the windows. The board and batten style gives the lower walls a clean, vertical look that pairs well with walls of windows above.

  • Can you add shiplap inside a sunroom?

Yes, shiplap is a popular interior finish for sunrooms and three season rooms. In this project, Fiderio & Sons removed the existing wood siding on the interior house wall next to the sliding patio door and installed white primed 7 1/4 inch pine shiplap. The shiplap brightens the room and gives the interior wall a finished, updated appearance that ties in with the new exterior siding.
