How to Prevent Damage to Your CT Basements This Winter

By Blue Corona Dev Dec 12, 2014

Winter is here, and that means it’s vital that homeowners protect their Connecticut basements from impeding danger this season. Heavy snow and rain, and flooding can pose a huge threat to unprotected basements and cost homeowners a large chunk of change. Here are a few tips from the professionals at Fiderio that can help you protect your Connecticut basements this winter.

Clear Off Your Snowy Driveway

This sounds self-explanatory but for CT basements, snow can seep inside if the driveway isn’t cleared off after heavy snowfall. Ice dams can form, weakening your basement walls and the water’s cycle of expanding and contracting is something you don’t want happening near your home – let alone your basement. Plus, when the temperature gets warmer, snow melts and without proper maintenance, it can create a massive flood.

Watch For Frozen Pipes

Pipes can freeze when they’re exposed to extreme cold temperatures such as sprinklers, outdoor faucets and supply lines. A small pipe can leak up to 250 gallons a day, which causes structural damage and mold. Check the home’s insulation and wrap the pipes in heat tape or cables. It could also prove beneficial to let warm water drip from the faucets at night to ensure the pipes won’t leak.

Clean Your Gutters

Cleaning your gutters should be a year-long process but during the winter, make sure your gutters are free from leaves and other debris. Keeping your gutters clean ensures proper water flow and that snow doesn’t accumulate so when it gets warmer, there isn’t a major flood. Also use downspouts and point them away from your home so water doesn’t build around the foundation of your home.

Check Your Winter Sump Pump

If water builds up and freezes in your Connecticut sump pump, there’s a chance it can stop the sump from working and/or cause permanent damage. Check the pump and make sure there’s no low spots for water to accumulate, and that it flows away from the house.

Seek Professional Help

If you’re unfamiliar with handling or preventing Connecticut basement damage, consult professional help as soon as possible. Staying warm in the winter is the most important thing, and getting a few precautionary tips from the experts can prove beneficial.
