The fall season is quickly rearing its head. The long summer days are shortening and the cool fall breeze is approaching. With the change of seasons comes the responsibility to prepare your home for what variables the fall brings. Whether it is gutters, roofing, or ct home improvement, Fiderio & Sons has you covered. Here are four home improvement tips that will prepare your home and family for the fall season.
Outside of the Home
As the leaves begin to fall and accumulate everywhere you look, it becomes necessary to regularly clean your gutters and downspouts. Make sure all drainage areas are unclogged by debris by removing the debris with a plastic scooper or with the special curved wand attached to your garden hose. Make your life easier by considering installing perforated gutter guards or install mesh that prevents leaf debris pile up.
Inspect your roof, or hire a licensed professional to examine your roof for seasonal wear and tear. If the shingles are chipping and curling, replace them to avoid leakage and keep the house aesthetically pleasing. If there is considerable damage to the roof, it's time to replace the roof before the winter months snow builds up and caves in the garage, ruining Dad's antique sports car.
Keeping the Home Warm
There is nothing more relaxing that having your feet up in your living room as a fire keeps the entire family warm. With fireplace season coming, have your wood-burning fireplace inspected, cleaned and repaired to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Only well-seasoned hardwoods in the fireplace to reduce buildup of creosote, a flammable compound that is the most common culprit of chimney fires. Also, have your chimney waterproofed to prevent long-term corrosion and masonry damage. Avoid rebuilding old chimneys by replacing damaged clay liners with stainless-steel chimney liner pipes.
As we all know, heat rises so an important housewarming tip is to check your attic to make sure the insulation is installed properly. The vapor barrier on insulation should face down toward the living space. If the vapor barrier is installed incorrectly then the insulation will trap moisture, causing possible water damage. To install attic insulation, unroll the insulation with the paper side out, covering the attack floor. Then install small pieces of insulation between joints on the attic floor. These pieces of insulation let air flow through it to prevent moisture build up and the condensation in the winter.
Childhood is incomplete without leaf piles. While kids love throwing themselves into a giant pile of leaves, homeowners have to deal with the clean up and bagging of said waste. To attack this mess, rake up the thick leaves that settle on the lawns surface. Larger leaves, when they get wet, can compact to the point where they suffocate the grass below and lead to all kinds of insect and disease problems. To make life easier, instead of raking away these potential harbors of disease, use a mulching mower to shred the debris into fine pieces. Whatever you do, don't waste fallen leaves because they're an excellent source of nutrients and organic matter. You can also add them to flower beds to put a winter blanket on your garden.
Another helpful tip is to aerate your lawn. Aeration reduces thatch (dried plant material or straw), improves drainage, and loosens soil. Make sure your aerator pulls plugs of soil from the surface rather than simply punching holes in the ground, which actually increases compaction over time.
